Put stuffy notions of dainty watercress sandwiches and extended pinky fingers to rest, as Local Root unleashes a distinctly American, farm-to-table twist on this stately British tradition, launching their own interpretation of Afternoon Tea complete with potato blini crowned with California sturgeon caviar, tea cakes made with locally-sourced, handcrafted Limoncello…and tea-infused cocktails.
Since opening last fall, Local Root has become a farm-to-table, locally-sourced hot spot in the center of Chicago’s high-rise-heavy Streeterville area, offering complete lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch menus. Now, Chef/Owner Isaac Weilver and Baker/Owner Yale Cohen team-up to present Afternoon Tea, offered 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
Watch for tiered platters of tea-time bites like Smoked Atlantic Salmon with Lemon Cheese, Fried Caper on Cucumber Chip. Potato Blini with Crème Fraîche and California Sturgen Caviar. Wisconsin Artisanal Bleu Cheese over all-natural Beeler’s Bacon from Iowa. Champagne Chicken with Chipotle Tomato Jam. House-made, hand rolled Croissants, drizzled with homemade chocolate sauce, and teacakes made with locally-crafted Limoncello.
Tea choices include Green: Moroccan Mint, China Jasmin, Enchanted Green. Herbal: Roasted Almond, Floral, African Sage Brush, or Black: Apricot, Bergamont, English Traditional. For non-teetotalers looking to Mad Hatter it up a notch, consider Tea-infused cocktails like the Earl of Ginington: Leatherbee Gin with Earl Grey Syrup and Ministry of Love: Old Forester Whiskey, Love Tea Syrup and Orange Blossom Water.
Afternoon Tea is served 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday thru Saturday, $24 per-person ($3 additional for a tea-infused cocktail in place of tea). Local Root, 601 North McClurg Court, Chicago.
